Partners of Cooperation
Fraunhofer IBMT
The Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering (IBMT) is one of the five institutes of the Alliance Life Science of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and concentrates mainly on the development of technology. IBMT is working in close collaboration with industry since its foundation in 1987. IBMT offers solutions in the areas of biomedical and medical engineering, laser medicine, biotechnology, health telematics, environmental control systems, laboratory development, cryo technology, material testing, home systems, air quality control in homes and cars, security systems as well as industrial process automation and in-line/on-line process control, in particular for food, chemical and pharmaceutical industry.
further informationTechnology transfer starting from basic research spans the whole innovation chain ranging from scientific-technical consulting, feasibility studies, prototype development, field tests, engineering and support to low- and medium-volume manufacturing is separate project phases. Spin-off companies of IBMT serve for system manufacturing when needed. IBMT is active in the regions Saarland State and Brandenburg State and fulfills overhead-tasks in these regions with regard to regional restructuring.
With the foundation of IBMT, Fraunhofer Society intended to contribute to science and research in particular to modern technologies and technology transfer in the area of clinical research in cooperation with well-known national and international university departments and hospitals in various fields. IBMT is located in St. Ingbert with its mother institute (near Saarbrücken) and is directed by Prof. Dr. Günter Fuhr who also accepted a call on the Chair of Biotechnology and Medical Engineering. The institute is financed by R&D contracts of public and private (industrial) custom87ers. The integration of medical/biomedical, microsystems engineering and biotechnology at IBMT has leading opportunity in Europe. IBMT belongs to the network of the 57 independent institutes of the Fraunhofer Society. More than 230 scientific and technical employees and a great number of research fellows as and practical workers belonged to IBMT in 2008.
Scientific-technical know-how, and a long-term experience based on practical results and products in the areas of microsystems/laser medicine, biotechnology, ultrasound and magnetic resonance in addition to new expertise in the field of sensor manufacturing technology guarantee a high-level quality of R&D support and a flexible and adaptive definition of customer-tailored and problem-oriented task solutions.
The European Center of Competence for Biomedical Mikrodevices (MEDICS) supports as a service center device manufacturers and biomedical users in the evaluation, introduction and usage of microtechnologies for biomedical research and new products. MEDICS gives access to the adequate technologies and biomedical expertises for the product or process development and supports all phases of the product and process development.
Since September 2001 IBMT is a member of the Fraunhofer Alliance "Life Sciences".

Perma Cryo Technologie
Almost every bio laboratory in the world houses a nitrogen tank and the associated cryopreservation of biological material is an established basis for medical procedures. Nevertheless, the current procedures of cryopreservation are reaching their limits with regard to the expected number of samples and the ability to meet future requirements.
Apart from enabling the simultanious handling of large amounts of samples in the low temperature range, new approaches have to be found in regard to the freedom of freezing, the identification and, above all, the ruling out of any risk of sample mix-up. Therefore, miniaturization, automation, and monitoring are the most important objectives of future cryotechnology.
The core elements of this new technology are small interactive sample tubes with an integrated memory chip, specifically designed for the use at cryogenic temperatures down to -196°C. The memory chip is permanently connected with one individual sample to rule out any risk of sample confusion.
Similar to an USB memory stick, the chip stores all relevant data and results throughout the entire laboratory workflow (as an electronic lab-book). Furthermore, the settings of peripherals like centrifuges or freezing robots can be controlled electronically by this chip.
The whole product range including sample containers, software and accessories is targeted to the fast growing market of biobanks and cryobanks, e.g. umbilical cord blood banks or collections of tumor cells.
Especially, developments in biomarkers and stem cell research do promise new fields of application.
All products can be used at standard temperatures as well.
The company is certified as a manufacturer of medical devices according to DIN EN ISO 13485.

BioKryo GmbH
The BioKryo GmbH, a spin-off of the Fraunhofer-IBMT, stores biological samples of high value with an unique storage equipment by using the new concept of Fraunhofer-IBMT for cryobanks, as they were introduced in the Fraunhofer-Bioarchive or the GHRC-HIV-Biobank. This concept illustrates an innovative standard for long-time storage of cryo- and bio-samples, as it is developed in the Fraunhofer-Cryostorage-Technology (FCT).
