The ASKION C-line® system has been purchased by the Deutsches Zentrum für Herz- und Kreislaufforschung DZHK (German Centre for Cardiovascular Research) exclusively for a cell bank that preserves human cells and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) generated from them. Thereby, the focus is on cells of patients with heart diseases that may lead to severe cardiac arrhythmia or myocardial weakness. Now, the iPS cell technology allows the production of a sufficient number of patient specific heart cells out of hair, skin or bone marrow cells. We are going to further investigate especially heart cells, but also other cell types, such as vascular cells and connective tissue cells, in order to find out how the genetic information affects their function. This approach will allow a better understanding of the mechanisms of certain diseases and, furthermore, the development of new strategies for therapies.
An effective sample management is required for the building of a patient specific cell bank. The ASKION C-line® system enables a bar code-supported sample management for the storage and retrieval or restoring of samples with an optimal sample tracking. By means of the liquid nitrogen work bench of the ASKION C-line system, a controlled and standardized freezing of patient cells and iPS cells generated from them shall be possible. In addition to this, the safe storage and retrieval of patient cells and iPS cells is ensured by the semi-automated high-security cryostorage system. This allows a safe handling of the samples and, most important, the avoidance of contaminations, which is an essential quality standard in establishing cell banks.
